# Unit 2: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up Your Gadsden Google Business Profile
In our last lesson, we established why your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the most critical marketing tool for your Gadsden business. Now, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. This lesson is a practical, step-by-step guide to creating and claiming your GBP, ensuring your business is set up for success from day one.
Follow these instructions carefully. A proper setup is the foundation for everything else we’ll do in this course. Let’s get your Gadsden business on the map—literally.
Step 1: Getting Started
First, you need to see if a profile for your business already exists on Google. Sometimes, Google or a customer will create a basic listing for a business.
1. Go to [google.com/business](https://google.com/business) and click “Manage now.”
2. Sign in with the Google account you want to use for your business. It’s best to use a professional email address (e.g., `yourname@yourgadsdenbusiness.com`) rather than a personal Gmail account.
3. Start typing your business name. As you type, Google will show you a list of existing businesses. If you see your Gadsden business in the list, select it. If not, you’ll be prompted to create a new one.
Step 2: Entering Your Core Business Information
This is the most critical part of the setup process. The information you enter here must be *100% accurate and consistent* with your other online listings.
#
Business Name
– *What to do:* Enter your official, registered business name. For example, “Gadsden Music Company,” not “Gadsden’s Best Music Shop.”
– *Gadsden Tip:* Do not add keywords like “Gadsden” or “Alabama” to your business name unless it’s part of your legal name. Google’s guidelines prohibit this, and it can get your profile suspended.
#
Business Category
– *What to do:* Choose the primary category that best describes your business. Be as specific as possible. For example, choose “Italian Restaurant” instead of just “Restaurant.”
– *Gadsden Tip:* Think about what your Gadsden customers are searching for. If you’re a plumber, “Plumber” is a better category than “Home Services.” We’ll cover choosing secondary categories in a later lesson.
Step 3: Defining Your Service Area (Crucial for Gadsden Businesses)
This step is vital for both brick-and-mortar and service-area businesses in Gadsden.
– *If you have a physical location that customers can visit* (e.g., a retail store on Broad Street, a restaurant in downtown Gadsden), select “Yes” when asked if you have a location customers can visit. You’ll then enter your full street address.
– *If you are a service-area business* that travels to customers (e.g., a plumber, electrician, or cleaning service covering Etowah County), you will define your service areas. You can list specific cities like “Gadsden, AL,” “Rainbow City, AL,” and “Attalla, AL,” or you can define a radius around your location.
Step 4: Contact Information
– *Phone Number:* Enter your primary business phone number. Use a local Gadsden area code (256) if possible to build local trust.
– *Website:* Enter the URL of your business website. If you don’t have one, Google gives you the option to create a simple, free website based on your GBP information.
Step 5: Verification
Before your profile goes live, you must verify that you are the legitimate owner of the business. This is a crucial step to prevent fraud.
– *Most Common Method: Postcard Verification.* Google will mail a postcard with a verification code to your business address. This can take 5-7 business days to arrive in Gadsden. Once you receive it, you’ll log back into your GBP dashboard and enter the code.
– *Other Methods:* In some cases, Google may offer other verification options, such as a phone call, text message, or email. The available options depend on your business type and history.
*Do not delay this step!* Your business will not be visible on Google until you complete the verification process.
What Happens Next?
While you wait for your verification postcard to arrive, you can start filling out the rest of your profile. Google allows you to add business hours, photos, a business description, and more. The more complete your profile is, the better it will perform once it’s verified.
In our next lesson, we’ll cover the critical topic of *NAP Consistency* and why ensuring your Name, Address, and Phone number are identical across the web is essential for your Gadsden business’s local SEO success.
