The Future of Gadsden: A Vision of Growth and Revitalization

25 January 2026

Gadsden, Alabama, is actively shaping its future through two significant initiatives: The RISE Project and the GROW Gadsden Master Plan. These efforts are designed to enhance the city’s quality of life, stimulate economic growth, and create a welcoming environment for residents, new families, and businesses.

The GROW Gadsden Master Plan: A Strategic Blueprint for Sustainable Development

The GROW Gadsden Master Plan represents Gadsden’s first comprehensive urban plan in nearly five decades. This strategic document outlines development priorities for the next 10 to 20 years, reflecting the collective aspirations of the community through extensive public engagement. The plan is built upon six core values:

Livable Built Environment:* Creating spaces that support living, working, and recreation.
Preserve Natural Assets:* Prioritizing the health and maintenance of Gadsden’s natural resources.
Resilient Economy:* Preparing for economic shifts and fostering local strategies that improve quality of life.
Interwoven Equity:* Ensuring equitable access to housing, services, health, safety, and livelihood for all citizens.
Healthy Community:* Promoting public health through access to nutritious food, recreational opportunities, environmental justice, healthcare, and safe urban spaces.
Responsible Regionalism:* Integrating local development proposals with plans from neighboring jurisdictions within the Greater Gadsden region.

This master plan provides the foundational framework for urban development, influencing aspects such as the revitalization of downtown Broad Street and the alignment of zoning regulations with the plan’s objectives.

The RISE Project: Accelerating Gadsden’s Transformation

Complementing the GROW Gadsden Master Plan, The RISE Project (Reimagine, Invest, Strategic planning, and Economic development) is a bold initiative focused on delivering immediate and substantial transformation. Spearheaded by Mayor Craig Ford, this project is backed by a significant bond exceeding $100 million, secured by the city’s strong financial health without imposing new taxes or fees.

A centerpiece of The RISE Project is the ambitious Gadsden Athletic Center (GAC). Envisioned as a regional attraction, the GAC will feature an aquatic center, 16 volleyball courts, 10 pickleball courts, eight basketball courts, and four baseball/softball fields, alongside a 1.25-mile walking track. This facility is projected to be a major economic catalyst, expected to generate over 2,400 jobs and contribute at least $190 million in economic impact. Construction of the GAC, which will replace the West Meighan Sports Complex, is scheduled to commence in early 2026.

Beyond the GAC, The RISE Project includes other vital undertakings that align with the broader goals of the GROW Gadsden Master Plan. These encompass crucial riverfront development, initiatives to enrich arts and culture, and significant improvements to local parks. These investments are rooted in the understanding that enhancing a city’s quality of life—a concept often referred to as ‘place matters’ in economic development—makes it more attractive to both businesses and residents. Gadsden aims to leverage its natural assets and these strategic enhancements to draw more people and industries to the area.

A Unified Vision for Progress

The synergy between The RISE Project and the GROW Gadsden Master Plan is crucial for Gadsden’s future prosperity. The Master Plan provides the overarching vision and guiding principles, while The RISE Project acts as the catalyst, initiating key developments that align with that vision. This integrated approach ensures that immediate growth contributes to a sustainable and meticulously planned future.

These initiatives highlight a renewed commitment to progress and prosperity in Gadsden. They demonstrate a proactive approach by city leadership to capitalize on the city’s strengths, address challenges, and cultivate a dynamic environment where individuals and businesses can thrive. Gadsden’s future is being shaped by a collaborative effort to reimagine its potential, invest in its infrastructure, and strategically plan for economic development that benefits everyone.
