Gadsden State technical grads get a direct path to a Jax State bachelor’s degree

GADSDEN, Ala. Graduates of 28 technical programs at Gadsden State Community College can now move straight into a bachelor’s degree at Jacksonville State University under a transfer agreement the two schools signed in late July. The deal lets students carry over both their general education courses and their technical credits, so they do not have to repeat work they have already done.

The pathway runs from an Associate of Applied Science degree at Gadsden State into the Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Studies at Jax State.

Why does this agreement matter?

Technical and career associate degrees have long been treated as end points rather than stepping stones. A student could finish two years of hands-on training, take a job, and then find that very little of that coursework counted if they later wanted a four-year degree.

That is the gap this agreement targets. Jax State President Don C. Killingsworth Jr. called it a first-of-its-kind pathway in Alabama, saying every eligible Gadsden State graduate now has a route to a bachelor’s degree regardless of what they studied.

Gadsden State President Alan Smith framed it around the two directions students take after an applied science degree. Some go straight to work. Others keep going in school. Smith said the agreement is built to serve both, including students who finish, start a career, and decide years later to come back.

Which programs are included?

All 28 qualifying degrees are Associate of Applied Science programs, spanning healthcare, engineering technologies, manufacturing, business, public service and information technology.

Named examples include emergency medical services, industrial automation, mechatronics, radiography, child development, computer science technology and precision machining.

Students in any of those fields who finish the associate degree are eligible.

How do the credits transfer?

Two things move. General education coursework transfers through Alabama Transfers, the statewide system that matches courses between public colleges. Applicable technical specialty credits transfer as well, which is the part that has usually been lost in the past.

Each student’s transcript gets evaluated individually, with the goal of moving as many credits as possible. That means the exact number will differ from student to student depending on what they took and when.

What is a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Studies?

It is a degree built to combine coursework from more than one area rather than follow a single traditional major. That structure is what makes it a fit here, because it can absorb technical credits that would not slot neatly into a conventional bachelor’s program.
